In most such cases ndiswrapper is your friend:

Do an 'lspci -v' note the model type of you nic and search on the net for what
driver it may work with. All info you need is linked from the ndiswrapper site.

and herein lies the problem:

as I said, the nic is detecting incorrectly. The manufacturer tells me
that the nic is:

Release Title: Network: GVC Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter, Driver,
Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.
3.97(WHQL), A02
Release Date: 01/09/2002
Description: GVC-Realtek driver for Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows XP

But SUSE (lspci -v and yast network hardware) has detected a:

Davicom Semiconductor, Inc 21x4x DEC-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet (rev 31)

So -- what am I supposed to do with that? How do I make the system
correctly recognize the NIC chipset? Can I just somehow install
ndiswrapper and "tell it" which nic, and even though the system thinks
it is something else, it will just work?
