Hello
I have a dual boot Thinkpad (R40 with XP / Linux) and want to remove
Ubuntu and install openSUSE without touching my M$ XP (required for
work). How do I uninstall GRUB, reinstate LILO / openSUSE, and leave the
M$ XP partition bootable from LILO? Linux partition maybe overwritten.
Thanks for all your help in advance.

Boot to the first CD/DVD and install SUSE Linux to the Ubuntu partitions.
The default boot manager for SUSE linux is grub and has been for some time.
SUSE Linux should figure out your partition scheme and use it. You'll be
able to verify during install exactly what partitions SUSE Linux sees and
wants to use. You will be able to modify that to whatever you want during
the install. You may want to format the Linux partitions before install
too. Formatting is an option during install so be careful which partitions
you choose to format!
SUSE Linux should also setup your Windows XP partition to be a grub boot
option as well as at least readable, assuming an NTFS partition. Double
check during the install though.
FYI: openSUSE = the project. SUSE Linux is the GNU/Linux distribution you
install. Therefore no one will install openSUSE unless they are duplicating
the project on another web/svn/whatever server somewhere.
