[SLE] No Suse after XP install - modem woes

Dear SuSE community:

I am from Kathmandu, Nepal. I have a 40 GB HDD on a Pentium Willamette (vintage P4 1.5 GHz) processor with a D845GLLY desktop board.

The hard disk initially had partitions C and D. Being the perfect idiot that I am; I installed my Windows XP on D drive. When I installed SuSE 8.2, it correctly identified my chipset video D845 G/GL. However, it did not find my audio codec (Sigma Tel AC'97). It was not much of a problem to me as it could be that I could not configure it properly.
My main problem here was my modem. I have an internal Frontech internal modem that says

ITU-T V.92/90 56,000 bps
Hayes AT command compatible
56,000/36,000 Data Download/Transmit
Support voice function/TAM
Support V.17, V.29 and V.27ter Group3 Fax
Data compression V.42/MNP2-4
Fax Command set Class 1
Auto Diagnostics

SuSE 8.2 did not even see it. I tried everything my friends suggested me. They told me that the modem was doomed as it was a Win Modem. Is there any progress in the field of these internal modems? Thank you for your kind consideration.

I now have Win XP on C drive now and it is running fine.

How can I run SuSE now?

trying to
convert a neighbor. The install went very well and everything
worked fine.
My neighbor then decided she found Linux more difficult than
Windows and
wanted to change it back, which I did.
Now she wants to make the laptop dual boot so she can learn
Linux while
still being able to use Windows.

When I try to install Linux 10 now it gives an error 'No Hard
Disks
Found' even though the current drive has Windows XP installed
and works
fine.

The laptop is an AOpen with a 40GB HDD set with one partition.

from CD1

Have tried normal and safe install but still have same problem.

Hello,

Just for clarification, is the laptop hardware exactly the same as it was when you were able to install Linux before?

Also, if you want to leave Windows on there, it might not hurt to repartition the drive with a utility like Partition Magic and make room for Linux before you try to install it.

Win is very bitchy , egoistic and intolerant. It always prefers to have the
first places. So install in on your first drive (C under Win).

then SuSE was fine until I had to check my mail. I have a dial-up modem
which linuz did not find. so I again put XP but now on C:

Winmodems are problematic. Sometimes you need a special kernel, and then you
don't have a "standard-Linux" anymore. Why not buy a external standard modem,
the run easy. If you need to have your internal Winmodem, search google and
try what you find.

Now SuSE is not in bootloader
can yo please tell me how I can use internet in Linux with dial-up? any
progress on the WinModem front?
thanks

If you install Win it always takes the boot sector MBR for itself as if only
Win would exist. So first install Win, then install the real operating
system. Or reinstall the boot sector (again: search google for how to's)
