[SLE] No Suse after XP install - modem woes


Dear SuSE community:

I am from Kathmandu, Nepal. I have a 40 GB HDD on a Pentium Willamette (vintage P4 1.5 GHz) processor with a D845GLLY desktop board.

The hard disk initially had partitions C and D. Being the perfect idiot that I am; I installed my Windows XP on D drive. When I installed SuSE 8.2, it correctly identified my chipset video D845 G/GL. However, it did not find my audio codec (Sigma Tel AC'97). It was not much of a problem to me as it could be that I could not configure it properly.
My main problem here was my modem. I have an internal Frontech internal modem that says

ITU-T V.92/90 56,000 bps
Hayes AT command compatible
56,000/36,000 Data Download/Transmit
Support voice function/TAM
Support V.17, V.29 and V.27ter Group3 Fax
Data compression V.42/MNP2-4
Fax Command set Class 1
Auto Diagnostics

SuSE 8.2 did not even see it. I tried everything my friends suggested me. They told me that the modem was doomed as it was a Win Modem. Is there any progress in the field of these internal modems? Thank you for your kind consideration.

I now have Win XP on C drive now and it is running fine.

Hello,

Just for clarification, is the laptop hardware exactly the same as it was when you were able to install Linux before?

Also, if you want to leave Windows on there, it might not hurt to repartition the drive with a utility like Partition Magic and make room for Linux before you try to install it.

If you install Win it always takes the boot sector MBR for itself as if only
Win would exist. So first install Win, then install the real operating
system. Or reinstall the boot sector (again: search google for how to's)
