The written data dffers.
The checksum test in the beginning appears successful and it lets me
start the burning process so I'm assuming the file downloaded cleanly.

You need to compare the md5sum on the download site to the one that k3b
calculates when it reads the *.iso image. If they are the same then its a
clean download.

"The written data differs" part makes me think that k3b is telling you that
the data read from the *.iso and burned to the disk is different. Never
mind whether the download is OK or not. There is a 'burning' problem...
Have you tried a different DVD burner in a different system with a fresh
download of the *.iso and verified the md5sum matches between the download
site and k3b?

looked at the deBugging log and it shows nothing useful. A couple of
command lines and a notation of every unit downloaded, it's dupe speed,
and time remaining... then closing track, flushing cache, closing
session... all looks completely normal. And 47m:36s later, I've got a

47m:36s before the k3b burning process is actually finished and you get the
previous "the written data differs" message? If that is true, then that is
your problem. Something is messed up on the system burning the *.iso.

useless disc that won't install in the PC. PC boots to the disc and the
installer runs, process appears to be going normally until suddenly I see
this text scrolling constantly and it says (as best i can make out)
something about an a failure with "semaphore". But at this point all I
can do is crash the box.

Or is this the point where 47m:36s have passed? Its obvious at this point
that the burned DVD is bad.

Have tried 3 or 4 different drives in that PC
including the one from my PC that burned the disc. No help.

Will this 'bad' DVD boot and install to a known working system? Assuming you
have spare space/partitions on a system to play/test with.

Other DVD's
will read/write in these drives when they are used in a working system.
We've been messing with this for days.... Burning to both DVD +R and to
+RW discs. Both are same behavoir in the end.

Did you also swap the IDE cable in the bad system?

Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks!

1. Verify a clean download by checking the md5sum off the download site
matches what k3b calculates when it loads the *.iso.

2. If it takes 47+ minutes to burn and finalize and compare the contents of
the *.iso burned to a DVD(+R/+RW) and then you get the "written data
differs" error - stop right there and fix this problem.

3. Make sure all your firmware is updated on all systems and devices. For
the CD/DVD drives got to www.CDFreaks.com and find your device and update
if possible.

4. Do you have a known good DVD from a previous version of SUSE or another
distro to try on the target system?
