I can't get Amarok to play a CD. (Nor XMMS) In the playlist, I can
navigate to the CD, find the .wav files, select them, and then try to

something I am doing wrong but just don't know what it is.

What do you mean by navigate to the CD? You should just use:

(1) "Actions" ==> "Play Audio CD" for Amarok.

(2) Configure the "CD Audio Player" input plugin and navigate to the
CD mount point you have specified for XMMS. If you don't have a
cable connecting your CDROM to your soundcard, you should enable
digital extraction in the plugin.

If you still have problems, trying starting the program from a xterm
and see if there are any error output when you start playing the CD.
