Helix orJust out of curiosity, why is it you like GStreamer over - say -
wasn'tXine?
I've been happy with Xine on my upgraded Amarok (1.4 b1) and really
unhappy with Helix before.
To tell the truth... I'm not really sure :-) Helix worked fine for
me.
Know what? One of the other posters reminded me - Helix doesn't do FLAC
(which I have many of) at all. Now, I'm happy to be using Xine.
I only stopped using Helix because the latest builds of Amarok
1.4 on apt were not built with Helix support enabled.
Heh, same for me.
I tried using
Xine and it would not play MP3s. A friend encountered the exact same
thing. Helix was not included... and Xine wouldn't work with MP3s (so
I know it wasn't just me).
Um, that is because you need to upgrade the xine.
For some reason a chickenshit suit at Novell decided that - to avoid
the "potential" for lawsuits - we'd all be inconvinienced and not get
MP3 playback (or encoding) in Xine.
I'm not quite sure how Novell would get sued for distributing LAME
(Lame Ain't an MP3 Encoder) in their product, since every one else in
the fscking world does it, but...
...anyway, your solution is to add packman and/or guru to your YaST
sources and delete then upgrade Xine to the one provided by them.
You also get the added benefit of playing commercial DVDs through
Kaffeine, which seems to work better than MPlayer for menus and such.
GStreamer worked... after I installed mad and gstreamer-mad, and then
ran the gst updater.
Personally... I'd be fine sticking with Helix if it was included in
the Guru (or other) builds of Amarok.
Reason #34453 not to rely on shared libraries outside of your
application distribution...grrr...
