I'm fairly new to linux so please bare with me. I installed Suse 10,
install went just fine, I was using Grub to dual boot Linux and XP, A
couple days later i installed all the available updates, ever since then
grub will not completly load, It shows Grub on the screen and then Grub
1.5 loading, and then the cursor justs flashes. I've tried reinstalling
suse, I reinstalled grub, I switched to Lilo, no matter what i do i still
have can not get past Grub Loading. I can get into Suse by booting to the
install dvd,click install,click other,click boot to installed system. I'm
not sure what else to try. I've been searching the forums for the last
couple days and still nothings worked. Any help would be greatly
appreciated
Rather than try to trouble shoot this issue, let's try the brute force
approach.
Copy or print the GRUB parameters in /boot/grub/menu.lst or go into
YaST/System boot loader just to make your job a tad easier later.
Go into YaST, Software Management, remove both GRUB and Lilo.
Then go back in and reinstall from the DVD. This will insure that the
patches are removed.

Once you have reinstalled the basic GRUB, then go into system/boot loader.
Make sure you have the appropriate sections under Section Management.
These should be about the same as you had originally. Then go into the Boot
Loader and make sure you install the boot loader in the Master Boot Record.

What we are doing here is to force a totally new copy of the MBR that points
to the stage 1.5 boot loader in /boot/grub, remember that the information
in the MBR includes a hard coded address of where this is on disk.
This should install the exact same bits that you initially installed.

Now, try to reboot. If you are successful, then we could assume that there
was some kind of a glitch that occurred when you installed the updates. No
matter how we try we are always plagues by Mr. Murphy. Once you show you
can boot, then try to use YOU to install the available updates. Most
likely, you will be able to reboot after the YOU.
