Not sure if the procedure is the same, but I recently moved Kmail from MDK91 to SUSE93 (5 separate upgrades) with the following procedure:
1) Login to a new user on SUSE93 system, but do *NOT* start Kmail.
2) copy ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc from MDK91 system to SUSE93 system.
3) copy all files/folders from ~/Mail from MDK91 system to SUSE93 system.
4) Start Kmail.

Kmail on SUSE93 seems to find the mail in Mail folder when started this way; not sure where the mail is stored otherwise.

The file copied in step 2 contains contact list and other preferences.
