[SLE] How to configure the dial-up connection on SuSE

I have a laptop that should be provided with a modem for dial-up
connections ... just in case no network facility exists/works in some
remote place.
I tried to configure the modem by Yast.
The first Yast pannel showed:
Modems to Configure.
Available are:
Other (not detected)
Nothing is configured.
I clicked on <configure> which brought up the following:
Modem Device:
/dev/modem
Tone Dialing
Speaker On
Detect Dial Tone
Then I click on <New> which brought up some new fields that I filled in as
follows:
Name for Dialing: provider0
Provider Name: INFINITO
Provider Number: 7027010707
User Name: piero.monville@xxxxxxxxxxx
Password: *******
In the following menu I checked the following boxes:
Mofify DNS When Connected
Automatically Retrieve DNS
Stupid Mode
Finally the following info popped up:
Modems:
modem0 Modem INFINITO
Providers:
provider0 INFINITO 7027010707
When I clicked on <Finish> YAst told me:
"Modem Configuration Successfully Saved"
But when I click on the plug small icon the connection does not even
start. I cannot hear any sound from the modem. I wonder whether the
manufacturer (GAMEpc) has built in a dial-up PCMCIA modem at all!
Of course the account I typed in exists on server Infinito and works on my
father's Windows box !
The provider I connect to has the following two servers for mail in/out:
Server SMTP (outgoing mail): mail.infinito.it
Server POP (incoming mail): pop3.infinito.it
Dial number: 7027010707
The first time I configured the modem Yast asked me the above
outgoing/incoming servers addresses. After typing in such info it asked me
for the DVD #1 and loaded something from it. I guess I made a mistake at
entering the server name for mail downloading.
After my first tentative configuration, Yast never asked me for the
outgoing/incoming servers again, even if I deleted the modem configuration
(by Yast) and restarted from scratch.
It looks like Yast stores such info permanently! I noticed this behaviour
also in the previous SuSE versions. I remember having to reinstall SuSE to
reverse this unpleasant situation. I wonder whether the system modules
(rpm files) pertinent to a dial-up connection are knows so that I can
reinstall just those ones.
Luckily I hardly ever have to use a dial-up connection... but whenever I
have to ... it's a nightmare to get it working.
Here is the contents of the Log file from my failed dial-up connection:
SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.58 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: pppd options error (exit code 2)
Any help would be grestly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Maura
