[SLE] SATA Controller

I've just ordered 2 new SATA hard drives this morning. While
researching which inexpensive SATA RAID controller to purchase for use
with the incoming drives, I found this thread, and read the link
discussing 'fakeraid' on Linux.
I'm not sure I understand the distinction between real hardware RAID
and fakeraid - (sorry aboout any bad SAT flashbacks) is 'fakeraid' to
RAID as 'Winmodems' are to true, hardware modems?
Assuming so, I'd assume I should just get an inexpensive, basic SATA
controller and implement software RAID. I've never implemented
software RAID before, whether under Windows or Linux. I'm just looking
for mirrored disks (RAID1); performance isn't terribly important.
How easy or difficult is it to use software RAID with OpenSUSE 10? The
system hasn't been built yet, so I'm starting from scratch.
Also, it's really just a curiosity as the machine is just for my home
LAN and downtime is perfectly acceptable, but would the software RAID
permit hot-swap of the drives, assuming the controller card is OK with
that?

I should also mention that if you're not particularly fussed about
hardware Raid, then using your onboard SATA and simply doing a kernel
based software raid works very well for Raid-1.
