I've tried starting several desktops (some remote) and noticed something
curious. The desktops start on vt7, then vt8 & vt9. But then for some
reason, vt10 is skipped and the next desktop appears on vt11. When I
switch to vt10, it appears as though it's being used for some status or
error messages. Why is it here, instead of perhaps on vt6?

Historic reasons probably. VT10 has always been the console to use
as reader for kernel messages, see your /etc/syslog{-ng}.conf
and /etc/inittab files if you wish to change this.

tnx

I've also noticed that you can have more desktops than available
function keys. However, you have to use the switch user menu, to do that.

That depends:
- in text mode: <LAlt>+<F{1,12}> => tty1..tty12
<RAlt>+<F{1,12}> => tty13..tty24
<LAlt>+<{Left,Right}> => switches next tty up/dn
- in X mode: <Ctrl>-<Alt>+<F{1,12}> => vt1..vt12

In text-mode, I suppose tty25 and higher would only be accessible with the
<LAlt>+<{Left,Right}> keys or with issuing the command (as root) 'chvt 25'.

In X mode, via the switch user menu or chvt from a terminal window.

Cheers,

Leen
