This Acer Ferari right? I really like this laptop and am think of
getting one next time I am bying how does it behave with SuSE
overall? Is hardware recognized etc.??
Runs like the proverbial "bat out of hell." Everything was recognized
except the Broadccom Wi-Fi card, but ndiswrapper fixed that. I put 2
GB of RAM in it. It flies.
I have multiple profiles (due to the nature of what I do), so I can't
use Network Manager. But after selecting which profile to use at
bootup, I see the KDE login screen in about 10 seconds, and that is
with a pause to type in the password to decrypt /home (I have it
encrypted).
Wicked fast. I have the Fingerprint splash screen configured in KDE.
Under SuSE 10 I would see the numbers increment. I never see them
under 10.1: the hand, then 2.5 for a fraction of a second, then my
KDE wallpaper.
I haven't tested the battery life thoroughly. Moving from building to
building while working on Cisco equipment (using a USB-to-serial
adapter), I close the lid. I have gone about two hours, at which
point I am finished with the router/switch changes and I am back in
my office. Since the laptop is used mostly for work, I don't know
what kind of battery life I could get.
I don't need GL, so I haven't tried XGL or the ATI proprietary driver.
Sound works. The speakers are the best-sounding speakers I have heard
on a laptop (but that isn't saying much).
Bluetooth works, but I seldom use it. Haven't tried the IR port,
haven't tried the card reader (I don't have any xD cards, and I keep
forgetting to take the SD card out of our camera).
My only complaint is the slot-loading DVD burner. If you need to read
a mini-CD, you are in trouble I have an external USB/1394 drive for
those.
We are pleased with them. The other people in my office all put in
several hours of research each when we looked at laptop purchases.
The Ferrari, in the opinion of everyone in the office, was the "best
bang for your buck" laptop. Acer appears to make the best-quality
laptops on the market at the moment, so we bought them.
Acer announced the Ferrari 5000 today; it will have the new dual-core
Turion in it, along with an HD DVD (if those ever make it to market).
Check around for pricing on the 4006. Buy.com had a deal three weeks
ago, and the price was $1699. Can't beat that price. Unfortunately it
lasted three days.... But check around. You should be able to find a
deal.
