"ssh -X" is no alternatice as there is no reliable ssh

You can't even build it from source?

I could not find any other configurations that should hinder the
DISPLAY or any advice what else to do.

Check that hpux did in fact get entered as an xhost - just run "xhost"
on your SUSE machine and check that the list includes "hpux".
Also, depending on your setup, you may need to use the full domain name
with xhost.
