[SLE] IP address is lost with cross-cable

Hi all,
I have a strange experience.
This morning I was preparing to go to several of our branch offices to install
OpenSuse10.1. My preparation was to bring my notebook and a UTP cross-cable,
because I planned to do a network install.

So, I checked the cable by plugging my notebook with my desktop PC. All was
good, I could do FTP from the desktop pc to the notebook. So, I went to the
branch.

What suprised me was, when I plugged in the cross cable to the desktop PC at
the branch, my notebook lost it's static IP address! No matter I tried to
configure it using Yast, the IP just didn't show up. I tried to configure it
using CLI: ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.200 netmask 255.255.255.0. It managed to
show up, but, the desktop PC couldn't connect to it, and I couldn't ping the
dekstop PC from the notebook.

So, I thought I would give up the cross cable and connect the notebook to the
branch office network cable, and.... it worked! The IP is there. Well, at the
end I managed to do network install, but using the existing network, not the
cross cable.

Can anyone suggest me what went wrong? Why the cross cable works at the
headquarter, and not at the branch office?

I remember that some network card just cannot be up-ped if it's not connected
to a real switch. Something using MII-NOT-SUPPORTED options in the ifcfg-eth0
script. Is this the case?

Thank you very much.

By the way, my notebook is Acer TM 802, with ALI BCM4401 network card, and the
desktop PC at the headoffice and branch office use RTL8139too network card.
