I can tell you that shrinking an XP partition on my new laptop with
Earlier traffic on this group about all of this discussion with various
approaches to resolution. Usually, I like to just have a second drive
for Linux
when I dual boot which is necessary if limited harddrive space is happening
or shrinking doesn't work.

In the end, I used partition magic to shrink the XP partition and then Linux
installed ok.
