Another option for monitoring network stats (if you're using a
WindowManager) is SuperKaramba. I use the Cynapsys plugin... does a
decent job of indicating up and downstream traffic as a value (number
of MB and as a graph with a regular refresh). There's dozens of other
plugins for SuperKaramba that do the same thing.
For the network card status thing... as already mentioned, use the
Network Status applet in the taskbar. Does all the nice network
management you expect it to...
