Are things like Æ or © or ® considered Latin Characters?

ß (ss) seems more germanic than latin to my linguistically
uneducated mind.

They are part of Unicode block #2 called "Latin-1 Supplement". Based
on that, I would say yes.

BTW, try <Alt>-<F2>wp:Æ, and see what Wikipedia tells you about
it. ;) Works also for the other chars you mentioned, and more.
