The desktop version of AMD's dual-core processor will come in four
flavors featuring two different clock speeds, 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz.
I'm using a CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ to send
this message. Yast, hwinfo, and windows 'device manager' are telling me
the clock speed of the two cores is 1 Ghz each.

With respect to the AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ are
they taking two cpu's (cores) running at 1 Ghz - summing their clock
speeds and calling it a 2.4 Ghz processor?
No. This page probably explains what you're seeing:

Thanks Dave,
So the clock speed varies with load. I've got to find something for this
machine to do at full speed (reality check).
