[opensuse] suse 10.2 does not work with canon 240 but earlier version work without problem

I have recently downloaded and installed Suse 10.2,
and am using a GNOME desktop. The install went well
and is a big improvement on Suse 8.1 which is my
original version, and is installed along side 10.2.
When it comes to printing, Suse 10.2 detects my canon
bjc 240 but when it comes to testing printer
connection nothing happens. so I click OK and receive
the following error.
"There was a problem while sending a message to the
printer. The operation has timed out" etc.
I have no problem printing when I boot into either
Suse 8.1 or Windows XP so I wonder if there might be a
conflict between the two linux kernals.
Can anybody suggest troubleshooting options as I have
trawled the net without much success. Thank you all in
advance.
