It's never going to be perfect, and between updates the effectiveness
tends to decline as spammers adapt to the filter rules. As spam filters
go it's one of the best, though. It's helpful to remember that it
doesn't do anything but tag mail with a spam score and classify it as
spam or non-spam; it's up to your email client to decide what to do with
the mail once spamassassin has classified it.
One caveat: When using spamassassin at the client level, please *don't*
bounce flagged mail back to the original sender. Most spam has forged
'From' addresses, so you're really just inflicting spam on another
innocent party when you do this. (This is sometimes called "backscatter
spam.") Once your email server has accepted a message, your options at
the client level are limited to sorting it into a different folder or
deleting it.
