Thanks. I've installed mercurial and downloaded/installed the v4l-dvb
drivers. Kdetv now sees the WinTV-HVR 900 and can tune in to 6
free-to-air channels, but without sound :(

However, mythtv cannot connect to the backend server, asks whether the
server is running or is the IP address wrong. It is looking for
mythconverg, user mythtv, password mythtv.

The IP address is localhost, but 127.0.0.1 doesn't work either.

Using knoda, I can connect to the mythconverg database and view its
tables, so I'm not sure why mythtv fails.

After getting this far, I don't want to give up now :)

Need a bit more info.

Is the backend running on the same computer as the frontend? If not you
need to configure the frontend with the ip address of the backend.

Same computer

Did you start the backend after configuring it?
rcmythbackend restart

This is what I use to test to see if it is running
ps -e | grep myth
25643 ? 00:02:16 mythbackend

Yes. I can do that now.

Also please have a look at
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Opensuse_10.2

That page seems to open all the time, here ;)

I've now got to the point where I can start mythtv frontend, and I presume it
is connecting to the hardware and the backend. However, when I select 'Watch
TV' I get this message:

"MythTV is already using all available inputs for the channel you selected. If
you want to watch an in-progress recording, select one from the playback
menu. If you want to watch live TV, cancel one of the in-progress recordings
from the delete menu."

But there are no recordings taking place :(
