[opensuse] wlan0 has "no wireless extensions"

Hello all,
I have a Prism2-based USB card (the Netgear MA111 v1) and I am trying it
out under 10.3. The card is recognized by lsusb and the modules
prism2_usb and p80211 are loaded. It appears under YaST where I can
enter it's configuration. Only iwconfig reports "wlan0 no wireless
extensions.".
Now, I know that the card is working (I use it on a daily basis on a
10.1 system).
And before anyone tells me to just use ndiswrapper or buy a newer,
better supported card, I also am having the exact same trouble with a
Broadcom based card (ndiswrapper) on my 10.2 laptop. The laptop is
somewhat troubling - I was using it without issue until last week when
after a reboot iwconfig started reporting "no wireless extensions". The
card is working under Windows.
Ideally, if someone could tell me which configuration files control the
wireless, that would be great. Network setup under Linux has always been
sort of a black box for me and I would like to get my hands a little
dirty and see how the configuration is done.
Best regards,
Jeremy
