I just joined this list this week (and I love this list so far...) but
there were ongoing conversations when I joined, and people trimmed down
as suggested. Reading those posts, I had the feeling there was more to
it than what I was reading in front of me.

However, if a thread were to run for a month, as some do, and nobody trimmed down the thread along the line, it might take ten or fifteen minutes just to scroll down to the reply,

Alright, maybe thats a bit of an exaggeration, but probably not to much of one. BUT, if printed out it might take four or five sheets to print it out. Do you REALLY want to scroll down that far. If you feel like you need to read the whole thread from beginning to end you can always go to the archives. In fact if more of us checked the archives before asking questions we might find the answer without having to post.
