None of the automatic installation tools (Yast-zypper-smart) seem to
leave the old kernel & source intact.

smart does

smart flag --show multi-version
java
kernel-default
kernel-source

I guess I manage to get it AFU somehow :) I usually use the GUI version
but I guess the CLI version offers more flexibility? At least with the
RPM -i, I have managed to keep old versions intact. I am inundated by
all of the documentation. It is impossible to keep up with it all,
literally. I think it is about time for a new book: "SuSE 10.3 for
Dummies" that condenses all of the recent 'gotchas' into one place along
with their solutions. :)
