Issue the command "mount -l". The line for the device should list the
label if it has one.
I don't know if you need to remount the partition, too :-?

involved: Label; Volume Name; and Gnome. Gnome renames 'label' to 'name'
and then uses 'volume name' as a display name. I had them all confused.
To make a long story short and to keep from confusing everyone, I now
have all four volumes labeled, named, and mounting in a consistent
sequence. Thanks for everyone's help.
