Re: [opensuse] My 10.2 machine stopped booting

I'm not sure but I think that "Online Update" did a kernel upgrade on 22nd

been any new releases in 10.2 recently?

Basically though, no, nothing except running "Online Update" from
time-to-time. This box is happily the way I wanted it. No new software,
hardware or other significant changes in ages actually. Many weeks at
least, and definitely not since the last time it has booted normally.

I'd have thought you would remember installing a kernel update via YaST Online
Update since YOU is launched manually and selected updates are displayed in
advance and the update in question incorporates a pop-up dialogue warning
that the system should be rebooted afterwards.

In any case, you wrote "the device map looks OK etc. etc." but I think you'll
want to take a second and much closer look... particularly
at /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Starting with 10.2 and especially in cases where YaST2 encounters multiple
hard drives and/or operating systems and/or a system with more than just
a 'typical' number (or arrangement) of partitions, it has a tendency to write
a broken menu.lst.

Feel free to send me your device.map and menu.lst directly if you want some
help sanity checking them.

Carl
