Re: [opensuse] usb boot support

But before going further, I have a question: why is it necessary to abort install and search manually for iso image, and not boot directly in the image? (like any CD/DVD)

That;s not exactly clear... you mean to say why can't openSUSE install
directly from USB image?

my goal should be to have a "live" openSUSE on usb key, that is a version that boot and run or can be installed like some live cd do.

In fact I can't make the system proposed in the wiki page work.

all tried with the 10.3 opensuse, mini cd, kde live or kde install cd

* On a small iomega Mb key, I could install the boot system and boot from the key. But then I couldn't make it find the iso image

* on an Gb key, I had many problems to make the key bootable. This may be caused by my (acer laptop) computer.
- most of the time, it don't find syslinux at all and gives "hdd without OS" or "FDD without OS" - however it finds the key, it gives it's brand name.
- once I had syslinux boot, but don't find the kernel (of course all was fine on the key, AFAIK)

I tried to install openSUSE as said in an other page and could do, but the result didn't boot (I could start openSUSE from a grub console)

remarks: trying to boot the mini iso is only for test, because the mksusebootdisk utility copies all what is already on the mini iso, so the second step is unusefull

I could find no way to open a cd image from the yast menus. However, opening console #9 I could navigate the system, find the cd image, even mount it as loop and read it, but no way to make YaST continue using it.

jdd
NB: Mandriva sell a mandriva on key, so it's possible, at least with some hardware
