If your fonts are too small to read it's usually an issue with your X
configuration. So KDE or Gnome are getting the wrong DPI value from the
X server. (The other possibility would be that you've set the small font
size yourself but I guess not.)
You can configure font sizes in KDE's or Gnome's configurations though.
