plugging in the USB cable the printer was detected and added, yet when I
tried to print a test page, the state was reported as "not connected -
will try again in 30 seconds," or something like that.

I fixed a similar problem following this procedure (in a 10.3 OSS):

http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_-_Reinstalling_the_Printing_System

I thought that was going to be the answer for me too, because after
going through that exercise, I was again able to print from both
printers connected to my server. But it turned out to be only when I
was actually working in a session *on* that server. As soon as I
configured the clients to use the server's printers via CUPS, things
stopped again.

Print jobs are accumulating in the queues, but not actually being
printed. There are three entries in one of the queues right now, with
the first one indicating state="processing" (and the others are
state="queued"), but nothing has happened overnight.

Access is limited to my network using its broadcast address, so I've
left the permissions open to all. Apparently there are jobs going into
the queue that CUPS is choking on, but I haven't been able to figure out
why.

Anybody here have an idea?

Thanks,
Jerry
