expectations for my chances of getting new gigabit NICs and n-level
wireless cards to work.
I'm happy to say that there was nothing to worry about (so far). I
bought D-Link DGE530T NICs for the wired workstations, and the new
hardware module recognized them right away, Installation went smoothly,
and they're working great. Working with NFS shares on the server is now
almost like working with directories on a workstation itself.
I decided to take it one step at a time, so the wireless workstations
are still at g-level, until the new cards arrive a few days from now.
If the one for my Toshiba laptop installs easily and works well, I'll
let you know. Meanwhile, I thought there might be others here who would
appreciate knowing about an inexpensive gigabit NIC that's well
supported by openSuSE 10.3.
card you are ordering and the chipsets. At this time, I know of only two
chipsets the Aetheros and RALINK. The problem is finding which cards
they are being used. In addition, the drivers are not completely
released. The Ralink you have to compile the drivers yourself and the
aetheros is not in the normal madwifi release. I could be wrong though.
