[opensuse] flac audio files choppy with VLC

Folks,

I'm noticing that when I play .flac audio files with vlc the sound is quite choppy, and I hear a fluttering noise in the background. I've tried several
different sets of flac files and they all do the same thing. Other audio files play just fine with vlc.

I tried fiddling with the vlc settings but to no avail. Any idea what I can do to fix this?

I'm running opensuse 10.3 x64 with current updates.
