[opensuse] That Damned NVIDA GT8600

Hi Guys

Well mySQL is working. Apache is running, wrote some BASH scrips. I am
even using PHP successfully. All is well on the programming front here.
However.... graphics is still giving me trouble.

I did download the latest driver from NVIDA and installed as outlined in
the entire collection of how to documents on the opensuse.org site. I
installed the driver and even got xgl running using gnome-xgl-switch
--enable-xgl.

Here are some of the problems I am having.

1) When enabling desktop effects on GNOME it still reports that my video
card does not support 3d Acceleration. However the Compiz effect are
running nicely(there are some glitches will get to them a little later),
I have the rain and the cube effect running. Why does my Video card not
get picked up as a 3d Accelerated card?

2) When I run gnome-xgl-switch from the Terminal (after an init 3) it
reports that the GDM is not running. However it still enables the xgl
system or disables it. Is it reporting this due to the run level 3?

3) When I run glxgears I get about 26800 FPS at default size. However
sometimes this is as low as 5800 FPS. It runs however. Does this mean I
am running 3D Acceleration

4) When running 3Ddiag it reports that 3D is not working. The openGL
game Armagetron does not start up.

6) When I disable compiz effects in GNOME it still runs in KDE. How do I
disable it on KDE? How do I enable it on KDE... basically where should I
look here?

7) When I adjust the amount of rain or the sides of the cube my screen
will white out completely forcing me to log into a terminal running init
3 and then init 5 on my system. Is this white screen a known bug?

Sorry for all the questions. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards
Neil
