I had a similar problem with my LG Flatron. After installing the video
drivers for my NVIDIA 8600GT it cured the problem. Seems like the video
chipset detection is still a little flaky (hint development team). If
you can identify the chipset you should be able to get a driver from the
makers website and installing that should solve your problems.

True. Although in the case of Nvidia, I believe it is a case of patents
and non-open driver code.

I've got one on my wife's system. Installed with YAST and have had not
problems. Full wide screen with all the pretty colors. She loves it.
