One thing I've been doing for years now is always using a new drive
or new partition for every major SuSE Linux / openSUSE upgrade I

On one of my boxes, I've still got the pared down, remnant root
partitions of a 9.2 and a 9.3 release—the system now running is
SuSE Linux 10.0.
I don't quite understand the reason for a "New" Drive, I just clear
the old partitions with any number of tools so it's a clean disk and
then install, unless the drive has some miles on it, then as a
preventative measure I will put in a new one.
The reason? So I can boot the previous system while working on the new
installation and if anything goes seriously wrong with the new
installation (say, you have very new hardware whose support has not
been fully shaken out), you can still revert to your previous working
installation.
