Re: [opensuse] VNC on SLES 8

Okay Dirk...

You mentioned 2 diferent needs and hinted at a the third...

So I guess I need to explain a little more your choices:

1) Allowing remote logins via VNC.
This setup adds unlimited number of virtual workstatiions
(screens/keyboards/mouses connected via vnc)
to your system. When you connect you get a the Same
login screen as on the system concole, and you can do
everything on the vnc consoles that you can do on the
normal console (except view videos). This would allow
you to start vnc, log in a as a user and do yast, OpenOffice
mail, etc.

2) You can allow remote connection to the console.
With this setup, you can connect to the actual console.
The you can view / interact with the console remotetly.
when you move the mouse on vnc, it moves on the console,
anything you do remote can be viewed on the console.

3) You can allow remote connections to you KDE desktop.
This setup allows some one (already logged into the console)
to allow a remote "support" to view/interact with his console.

the third setup is more for remote support, and requires that
you are already logged in before it works.

The second version allows for only one console to be shared, and
allows for anyone to watch what you are doing remote on the console.

The first version allows for anynumber of console, and actions are
not shown locally, but when you close the vnc window, the system logs
you off, so you cannot start a program, leave and return to it latter!

Just incase you didn't know it, you have other options also:

Free-Nx, does the same as the third option, allows disconnect / reconnect
to session and is faster to boot. (also on SUSE DVD, and has client for
windows/linux/mac and others)

I'd rather not place a how to do for all of these into the thread,
so please choose 1, 2, 3, or NX..

All are relative easy to setup...

What do you want VNC to show:
- the Operators console?
- remote support of a users Desktop?
- A remote login (remote Desktop?)

Each of these can be done, but each are setup different...

Thank you. I would like to do remote support from a user's desktop
(VNC from my PC to the Linux server, and run yast, etc.) But I don't
want to use X on my PC, I need to VNC onto the server and work as if I
am on the server.

Basically take over the server (console) from my PC.

Jerome, maybe I did not understand your option (1) clearly - but I use
that all the time without losing any running programs. I do all my work
on an OpenSuse Desktop machine - where I rarely sit at the console. I
logged once, started vnc server, and logged out. Now I fire up a vnc
client to get to my desktop on the linux box, do my work, close the vnc
client. Then I can hop to another PC later on, fire up the vnc viewer,
and get back to my linux desktop, where any programs that I had running
are still running fine. Do the programs running in your XVnc desktop
really shut down when you close a vnc client or did I mis-understand
your option (1) ?

Thanks and regards,
