It made me wonder if it's possible to configure a NIC to be part of
a VLAN, instead of requiring a switch port to be configured for that VLAN.
I don't know much about VLANs. But you might find this article helpful.

A VLAN is simply a means of using an ethernet switch on mulitple LANs without interference. On the network I was working on yesterday, they've got a combined data and voice system, with both coming down the same wire. Apparently the phones are supposed to apply the correct tags to the phone and data traffic. On this job, there were 5 switches with 24 - 100 Mb PoE ports and 2 gigabit ports. One of those switches also had built in router functions. And there was also a 24 port gigabit switch, used to stack the other 5 and for servers. Most of the ports were trunks, but the router switch had one configured on VLAN 1, for internet access and the gigabit switch had 5 trunk ports, for stacking and a mixture of VLAN 1 ports for servers and VLAN 2 for VoIP. I also placed a VLAN 3 port on the router switch, for the management interface. Lots of fun, getting all that configured. ;-)
