Looks like you're on to something. My "player" drive plays anything I stick in it. My "burner" drive won't play nor burn anything, CDs nor DVDs. Since it was working earlier and we have cats, I'll try cleaning it before burying it. Sometimes it actually is the hardware.
Don't forget trying a new data cable: those 80 pin ribbon cables are quite fragile.
And... now that I think, you say you have two units? Perhaps both on the same cable? Then check the jumpers. It is also possible that the unit that doesn't work may work when connected alone.
