Are you booting into run level 3 or 5 on startup? Run level 3 is test
only with networking, run level 5 is full blown X windows with
networking etc.
Check you /etc/inittab file and look for the lines:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:
They are near the top. Make sure this is set to 5 as opposed to 3.
