[opensuse] KDE font(?) problems

I recently installed Kompare onto my 10.2 box and noticed that my
splash screen is messed up.
Specifically, all characters appear as boxes, even the menu items. Yet
once I login, everything looks
fine. Anyone seen this or know how to fix it? I'd think a re-install
of one of the kde rpms might
fix it, just don't know which one or how to without deleting and
re-installing. Alternatively, it could
be INSTALLED_LANGUAGES which is blank. How can this be reset?
