Hi,

For what I'd like to be able to do, a KDE I/O slave will not
suffice, it has to be system-wide and transparent so arbitrary
scripts and applications can access it.

I don't know if it'll do what you want, but Konqueror lets you browse
the contents of zip files.
I thought I covered that by saying that KDE I/O slave-based solutions
won't work for me and that I need to be able to access contents
from "arbitrary scripts and applications."
