Sounds like you are asking for a Filesystem in USErspace aka FUSE.
Yes, that much I realized shortly after asking.
Next step is to visit the FUSE project page on SourceForge
(http://fuse.sourceforge.net/), and look at the list of available
filesystems based on FUSE.
For archives, you'll need
http://fuse.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/ArchiveFileSystems
Thanks. That's more like what I expected, namely that this was an
obvious thing to create. Now I just have to figure out which of the
several implementations is best for me.
