Re: [opensuse] MythTV Video Capture/TV Card Recommendation

ATI cards are just about as useful as "WinModems"

I'll second that... at least for a MythTV setup... the best advice I
can give is use ANY other video card other than ATI. There are some
irritating known bugs in the ATI drivers that cause all sorts of
problems with a MythTV setup such as:
- segfaults in MythTV when exiting the "WatchTV" module
- full system locks when switching desktops
- loss of vertical hold in "WatchTV" module when changing channels
- MythTV sub-menus do not display or load properly
The forums etc are full of people discussing the issues, and have been
around since at least the middle of last year. I've encountered all
of these probs with my ATI based setup, and none of the problems when
I used an nVidia card.

There is a workaround for all problems though. If you do have an ATI card

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true

will fix the segfaults, lockups and menu display problems. The
workaround for the vertical hold problem is to exit the TV module back
to the main menu and restart the TV module. I've found no other way
to correct this.
