Ok I have more or less found the problem. I had upgraded to kernel-pae-2.6.27-rc5.git2.5.i586 in preparation for testing factory and that is when the problem started. I have downgraded to kernel-pae-2.6.25.16-0.1.i586 and the problem has gone. I had kernel-pae-2.6.26-6.i586 from factory installed a while back and I had no problem. I am going to explore the problem a bit more and file a bug report.
It's not a good idea to mix factory and standard packages. Johannes Meixner explained why yesterday on the thread about hplip. You have been bitten.
Better keep another partition to test factory on its own. Even better, another computer... but few can. I can't.
