Re: [opensuse] Can't play my DVDs any more

On September Friday 12 2008, John E. Perry scratched these words onto a
coconut shell, hoping for an answer:
Watching all the traffic recently regarding dvd playing, I installed
the software according to M. Nomiya's advice, and played a couple of
dvd's without problem (we only have one TV, and my wife monopolizes
it until 10PM :-).

Tonight I tried to watch another track of one that I'd watched two
nights ago. I insert the dvd, and I get an immediate message from
Konqueror, "invalid file type". So I figure I must have started it
up with mplayer and start mplayer. Nothing.

I just used both of these dvd's with no issues two days ago.
Yesterday there was a kernel update, but I don't remember anything
else.

Any ideas what I've done wrong?

Hey John, you don't say what version of Suse ( or OpenSuse ) you have,
or I missed it. But if you are using 11, there's a step in the install
that loads a driver of watching such videos. Then plays the DVDs in
Kaffeine. w/o problems. when the DVD is recognized it just asks if you
want to play it.. ( May be time to upgrade? <VBG>)

I've got one running in a window at the moment, so I can send this..

Just plonk it in the dvd dvdrive and away it goes.I just stuck a 2nd one
in to see if there was a problem . I've watched it before so I wanted
to check that ... you did say you wanted to watch something you had
seen before, didn't you?

Anyway.. you might upgrade, or consider and upgrade for easy peasy way
to play the things. OR... I don't know if that is just a perk I got for
buying the boxed version of Suse11 , you might see if the required
codecs are available for Opensuse11. But it's worth the upgrade not to
have the hassle of going all over for files and programs.
