[opensuse] Broken screen resolution with gnome-display-properties

I'm using openSUSE 11.0/Gnome with the Nvidia driver for Quadro FX550
connected to a 24" WUXGA 1920x1200 panel. To enlarge a remote
tsclient/rdp5 Windows window, I temporary selected 1600x1024 resolution
with the Control Center Screen Resolution tool (gnome-display-properties).
But this broke the display resolution and placed a vertical split 1/3
from left of the display. (The same thing I've done several times on my
mobil workstation). The right part of the desktop is placed in the left
split window and opposite. Using the Gnome desktop is practical impossible.
Tried to reconfigure the screen with SaX2 from run level 3, but there
everything looks ok with 1920x1200 still in use and with test. The
xorg.conf also contains only 1920x1200.
And beside, changig session to KDE works ok at logon.
Therefore this looks not like a X problem but more like a screwed up
problem in Gnome desktop and its control center screen resolution in
conflict what SaX2 shows.
I've been able to do a remote 'ssh -X' login and started
/usr/bin/gnome-display-properties
From its menu it looks like 1280x1024 is the current resolution andthere is nothing higher to select either. Therefore this looks like a
screwed up problem in Gnome desktop and its control center.
Where does gnome-display-properties save its screen resolution
configuration, and how to possibly edit it back to the menu with 1920x1200?
cat ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/screen/default/0/%gconf.xml
<gconf>

<stringvalue>1920x1200</stringvalue>

</gconf>
