Hey Guys running Beta 2 have you found that NetworkManager doesn't write to
your /etc/resolv.conf?
This is intention!
I opened up a bug report and it got closed saying that yast doesn't handle
network anymore (totally irrelevant to my bug report).
Never ever mention the bug ID if you have filed one. ;)
When I have an interface on DHCP4 (I don't care for 6 right now), nothing
writes to my /etc/resolv.conf here are the permissions:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 143 2008-10-13 07:56 /etc/resolv.conf
anybody that has 11.1 and it's working as expected please let me know what the
ownership / permissions for your resolv.conf is..
It works as expected. The intention is not to touch /etc/resolv.conf in
the case an interface is manged by DHCP. Instead the dynamic resolver
settings are merged at run.
Black SUSE magic? No. Cf. the ntpq command.
Security risk? No, as a socket is usef IIRC and therefore no
authentication is needed as soon as the user is in the right group. The
alternative here was to use a shared secret generated at install time.
Why the heaven are these guys doing this? It is quite important to have
the right time for many applications. But we're faced more and more
with setups where static NTP configurations aren't adequate.
In some cases the configuration is provided by DHCP in others by the
means of DNS SRV records.
That is the background and motivation no longer to modify the file
/etc/resolv.conf.
The remaining question to me is: Are you running into trouble with the
approach of openSUSE 11.1 beta 2? Or does it work 'somehow' and you
like to know why and how?
Recently there had been a discussion on missing documentation for this
feature. The result might not yet been included with the current beta.
If this is the case please reopen the bug you've filed and add a pointer
to the mailing list archive of this thread.
