Thanks for your input.

I am using the standard opensuse ati driver called "radeon".
I've been using this driver for several years with the same card
but with an 17" CRT monitor with resolution 1024x768. I
never experienced any problem with it.

My TFT is set according to the manufacturer's instructions (20"
monitor, 1400x1050 at 60 Hz. The only thing I can think of
that the graphics card is not powerful enough for changing the
screen fast. I don't think it is trying to change resolution.

I will try the monitor with another more powerful card.
