Bottom line is that mc is a bit limited in this area.
No, mc is not limited but "display" may be. You may configure mc to
use whatever utility you wish to display photos or any other action.
The actions mc makes are all configurable.
F9 -> C (or Command) Edit extension file
Edit menu file
Edit editor menu file
Edit syntax file
It only does what you tell it or what it was previously configured to
do.
