The command growisofs is not so particular as K3b.

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cdrom=<CD_image>
will burn CD iso on DVD, which is impossible with K3b.

I discovered that one evening when I wanted to try some CD image and
having bunch of DVDs and no single CD.

How come I could burn a CD-ISO onto a DVD-RW using k3b? I just chose
"Burn DVD ISO Image" and selected the Image (2.5 MB CDROM Image) ;)

My usual procedure:
Drop raw medium in a tray, click on iso image file, lower the burning speed,
wait until k3b ends md5 calculation, start. In that scenario k3b was
particular and it will not burn CD image on a DVD+R, nor DVD-RW disk. I can
imagine that the rest of the DVD familly would be treated the same.

Tools > Burn DVD ISO Image
works fine, as you said.

Why it is so, is another question.
I guess something about workflow.

Fiddling around I found that formatting DVD+RW doesn't work when DVD is
mounted, and it is mounted (grabed) by the system. The dialog popup bails out
so fast that I have no idea what was there. After that I can sit and watch
k3b as much as I want. CPU usage is normal with occasional k3b activity of
2-3%. So far I recall this was already debugged before.

Something should tell the system that k3b is running and needs device.
But this is KDE3 that no one really cares about.

I'm not in the mood to play with this in KDE4. On my current machine it is
reacting slower on commands than I'm used to. I see few potential reasons,
but 4.2 is just transient release, that I don't want to spend much time on.
