Interesting. I wonder what is different between my setup and yours.
I'm using KDE4.2.2 with nVidia 180.44 now, and if I check/test the
screen savers, they appear to be working fine - granted i never use
them anyway, but when I do set them and turn on, they appear to be
working as they should.

Maybe it is not optimal configuration for particular hardware,
like this here:
http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_Configure_Desktop/General/Desktop/Nvidia_FX5200

It makes big difference in desktop response times.
